I got The Grimm Fairytales collection, almost every ending is bittersweet or dark.

I read the story of "The Little Mermaid" as a little girl, about a year or so before the Disney film was released. I remember being psyched to watch the movie, but at the same time, I was dreading the unhappy ending, because I didn't want to see the Little Mermaid come so close to being with the man she loved, only to sacrifice herself to avoid killing him. When I watched "The Little Mermaid" for the first time, I was so relieved that Ariel lived happily ever after with Prince Eric and didn't die at the end. I always loved that movie.

Becoming a "daughter of the air" doesn't sound nearly as bad as turning into Sea foam, which is The Little Mermaid tale I am familiar with.

Let's not forget that in Snow White, the prince purchases the coffin with Snow White as a decorative piece for his castle! No romantic kiss to wake her up, but because a laborer dropped his corner of the coffin.

Or Sleeping Beauty. The king's wife didn't just try to kill them, she tried to have the cook bake the illegitimate children into a pie and feed it to the king!

Kinda fitting you opened with the beginning of Shrek. Since 90% of the movie was just DreamWorks making fun of Disney.

The thing is about fairy tales it didn’t start off as child’s tale these stories (mostly German) has cautionary dark oral stories from grandmothers to their granddaughters about people being unfair by upper societies and wolves served as an allegoral metaphor for human male criminals.

the version of cinderella Disney did was not based on the brother Grims version but on Charles' Perrault's version . I love learning about the original story

I'm actually not all that surprised that these movies have the craziest parts of the actual fairy tales left out. i mean after all they wouldn't exactly be child or family friendly if they didn't.

You have forgotten to mention that the hunter cuts open the wolf stomach to rescue little red riding hood and her grandmother.

Most of the times I remembered the tale about red riding hood, it was always about red and granny getting eaten and not being saved. Of course, I didn't think much of it, but, hoodwinked was the 1st movie to present a different version of the story. I know this wasn't included in the video, but, with the boy who cried wolf, every time it was brought up, it just presents the idea of the flock and the boy getting eaten.

Shelley Duvall's Fairy Tale Theatre is very good. She had ALOT of big name stars in them

I have a folklore/fairytale book that tells the history of the story and were they originated. Did you know that Cinderella is the oldest fairytale dating back to 9th century China. I believe it was a Goldfish that granted Ye Xian (Cinderella) wishes.

Pinocchio and Peter pan were alot more darker... Even the Disney version of pinocchio being whitewashed was still dark
