Special grand jury approved in Georgia's Trump election probe

A special grand jury will be convened in Fulton County, Georgia, as part of the investigation into former President Trump's alleged interference in the 2020 election. CBS News' Vladimir Duthiers has more.

A special grand jury focuses on just one investigation to hear evidence and focus on only one case. The special grand jury is held for a year. The special grand jury determines whether there is a preponderance of evidence to move the case to a jury trial by voting to indict by a majority of the special grand jury members.
In a majority of the time the special grand jury indicts, since they only determine if a possible crime has been committed for a jury to determine guilt or innocence.

The District Attorney doesn’t need to ask the special grand jury for an indictment, she can present evidence to a judge for an indictment. It is quicker to have the special grand jury issue a subpoena since they are there only for the DA’s investigation and the DA doesn’t have to request a subpoena from a judge with other items on the court‘s docket.
