The Japanese words printed on the tank top “平和” and “戦争” mean “peace “and “war “. The Japanese word on the graphic T-shirt “レトロ” is a loanword for “retro “ in English, and the other word on the shirt “な波” doesn’t make sense. “波” means “wave “. I’m sure that a graphic on the T-shirt is based on a ukiyo-e by Hokusai Katsushika. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese traditional painting that was established and became popular among ordinary people during Edo period (1603-1868). It’s the most well-known traditional Japanese painting in the west. Most of the subjects of ukiyo-e are the daily lives of commoners, Kabuki actors, profiles of beautiful women and famous places. The graphic picture on the T-shirt is based on the woodblock print called “the Great Wave off Kanagawa “.
