In 1912, Corrado Gini, an Italian statistician and demographer, developed the Gini coefficient to measure the income or wealth distribution of a country’s residents. As such, it’s the most commonly used tool for the measurement of inequality.

With that we can turn to the 2018 Inclusive Development Index (IDI). Here, under the pillar ‘Inclusion’, is the indicator for ‘Wealth Gini’. This indicator measures the differences in the distribution of wealth for all the countries in the survey. Higher numbers signify a greater inequality in wealth distribution – ergo, 0 would be total equality, 100 would show total inequality. The five-year trend is based on the absolute difference in wealth Gini between 2013 and 2017. The IDI uses as its source the 2017 Credit Suisse Global Wealth Databook.
