I had a wipeout on a ~5ft wave when I was a kid that made me lose my sense of direction of up and down for about 5 seconds, which felt like an eternity at the time, and since then gained a very serious respect for the power of the ocean.  I can't even begin to imagine what this stuff might feel like.

I can't imagine how horrible it must feel to be spun, flipped and nearly killed by waves that big! So much respect for these guys!

i used to watch surfing videos and be like... "doesnt look that bad its water". But now that I surf and know that even a 3-5 foot wave is kinda powerful. I cant imagine surfing big waves like that.

Any tips on surviving things like this? Like what do you do when you're getting thrown around like that? Do you try to swim up, just lay there? What do you guys do? Trying to get into surfing, obviously I'll start way smaller than this but just in case I get caught in a tricky situation I wanna know what you guys do.

I had this wipeout in Cloud9. My board stuck between my legs. It hit me right there. So painful that i cant hold my breath anymore. And theres a set of waves coming. The third and biggest wave almost toke my life. I had this final surface and one last breath. Still lucky. Lesson learned. Never understimate the power of waves. One Love!

A friend of mine went over the falls on the first of a big powerful 11' set and was held under by ALL SIX WAVES. He popped up in shallow water with all his breath already exhaled and hauled air in for an age sounding like an elephant trumpeting. I'm so glad he made it because when he saw him go over I paddled in after him looking for him because I thought he was gonna drown.

Nothing compared to this, but this summer I was surfing in OCMD and I was out in the water and there was a 6 footer coming at me. I knew I didn’t want to take it so I went to paddle over it. Just so you know, I’m 15, 90 pounds, and 5’2, and I had a longboard so I physically couldn’t duck dive under the wave. Anyway, I thought I was gonna make it over but the ocean had other plans. It flipped me and my board just as I was about to get over the top and I started falling backwards. My board came back and hit my nose (which broke) and I was stuck underwater for a few seconds with a headache and a bloody nose. It’s so scary when you have no control over your body and your just flailing in the water trying to keep everything in so you don’t break anything else. To make everything better (or worse) I was surfing in low tide because you’re on, y allowed to surf before 10 or something so I was dangerously close to the bottom. Anyway I came up perfectly fine except for my nose which healed in a few weeks because it wasn’t too bad. I kept surfing though even when I was supposed to “lay low with physical activity “ lol. A similar thing also happened to my friend but he sliced his stomach with his fiberglass fin when he wiped out.

Good memories 😎🤙🏽🏄🏼‍♀️
