I am rather ashamed to say that I have purchased a lot of book that I will probably never read. So, I decided to do a bit of an unhaul.
But in order to make it fair, I am reading 20 to 50 pages of each before I make my decision.
This is the second episode of this challenge and this time, we're doing it with only Illumicrate books!

100% agree on your commentary about “suffering” not being enough to make us care about a character. That’s such a shallow and cheap way to try and gain empathy points with a reader.

Some Desperate Glory is a fantastic view of child soldiers, propaganda, and queerness inside the military. She's not a likable character. She's a victim fighting the system with the tools they teach her. I really recommend this book ❤

Okay, the aesthetics of this vlog! Love the switch to a different scenic view for each book. Special edition views for special edition books? A shame such pretty books don't live up but free up that space!

You ended up reading the Hugo award winner with Some Desperate Glory - I haven't read it, but some friends that have have also not particularly enjoyed it.

Your complaint about Some Desperate Glory is my exact complaint about R.F Kuang's books. What happened to subtlety and nuance when handling social issues (babel) ? And suffering doesn't make you a good character (The Poppy War).

I was eyeing Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh. Not so sure about it now. I might try a shorter work by her like Silver in the Wood to see if I like her writing.

I skipped all of these illumicrate books except Witch King which I dnfed 20% in, I have no regrets.
