Pakistan is in the middle of political chaos — and one man is at the center of it all. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted last year in a no-confidence vote, but polls suggest he remains the country’s most popular political leader.

Within a year of being removed from office, 70-year-old Khan has survived an assassination attempt and faces dozens of new charges ranging from corruption, terrorism to sedition. The current government has branded the popular politician known for his philanthropy and cricket career as a "militant" and attempted to arrest him using excessive force, while tear gassing, attacking and arresting his supporters. Khan believes the charges against him are political persecution tactics meant to distract him from campaigning for elections due this year.

VICE World News’ Isobel Yeung sat down with Khan at his home in Lahore on March 6, 2023.

A lot of what he said is true. Life in a third world country is completely different from the west. Some countries don’t have the privilege of having strong opinions

"Poor countries don't have the luxury to criticize. Unfortunately, rich countries are also selective."
This is one of the most honest and practically candid words I have heard from a leader of a nation. I would support Imran if I was an educated Pakistani.

As a Canadian I can tell you this guy could run our country ten times better than our current prime minister

"If I wake up and there was no challenge for me, I will think its the end of my life" powerful message from Imran Khan.

Dude didn't dodge questions at all and even went headfirst with quick concise answers even to the uncomfortable ones that questioned him.

No diplomatic answers, straight forward to the point answers, shot thrice, threatened, over 100 illegal court cases against him, he is still standing with pride. What a leader.

As a Bangladeshi, I pray for the Pakistanis who deserve a better leader than corrupt generals who keep destroying this fragile nation.

He’s right, unfortunately. When you are a poor country you cannot speak up whenever you please. A developing country would be crushed if a world superpower, especially China, cut them off. You really have to take all the help you can get. I don’t agree with everything he said but I have a strong respect for this man for going into politics to fix his country.

I'm an indian and I thought he was an uneducated radical leader because of what indian media portrayed him as, but now I can say he's more educated and intellectual than most our leaders🙌🏼

This man and his struggle deserve a lot more attention in the press. Perhaps the most underrated and underreported leader of our time, not because of Pakistan’s relevance at the global stage, but simply because of the integrity of his struggle, the principles for which he fights, and the mammoth obstacles (including the attempt on his life) against which he continues to push forward. God speed, Khan.

Wow, he's earnt my respect. I had a rough idea that he was some extreme fanatic who ruled with an iron fist and a big red button, but clearly he is a caring and earnest leader. Imran Khan would have my vote! He didn't dodge a single question and his outlook on Afghanistan has provided me with a new perspective on how the world should react to the Taliban.

As an Indian, I have seen the media portray him as a bad guy a lot but seems pretty genuine to me

He’s genuinely so well-spoken and collected. There haven’t been many politicians like this across the globe, let alone in Pakistan.

Being a Pakistani i know these are the most difficult questions ever asked to him. Kudos to the interviewer. Khan responded very straightforwardly. This was one of the best interviews I had the privilege to watch

From listening to this video, Imran Khan sounds like a very pragmatic person. His answers were very concise and informative. I'm Armenian and I'm really interested in learning more about Pakistan's politics and history. Also, I hope once Pakistan's internal problems are resolved, Imran Khan can finally recognize my country and establish diplomatic relations. Our past President has also showed interest in developing diplomatic ties with Pakistan.
