Biology Dictionary: Defining the term Agrobacterium tumefaciens
Biology Definition: - Agrobacterium tumefaciens | Gram negative bacterium commonly used in gene technologies. Agrobacterium infects a wide variety of plants causing tumorous growths known as galls by means of a tumour inducing plasmid (called the Ti plasmid). It is the plasmid that is of particular interest in genetic engineering since it can be used to introduce genes, such as herbicide resistance into a host plant (i.e. providing crop plants with herbicide resistance). The tumour inducing gene is replaced with a specific gene of interest and a marker gene (for antibiotic resistance) allows for the selection of transformed cells.
Learning Biology is a whole lot easier when you know the definitions of commonly used words. In fact a good command of biological terminology can mean the difference between a poor grade and an excellent one! (Since of course you get marks awarded for using the correct technical language in the right context when answering exam questions).
Make learning, revising and using the biology dictionary a regular part of your biology studies and revision with this Spoken Biology Dictionary, which is of great benefit to all students of biology, in particular GCSE biology and A-Level biology students. But, no matter what level Biology student you are, whilst learning the biological sciences this biology dictionary will be of fantastic value.
