I got high 30s out of 40. 38/40 was my highest and here are my tips.

1. High frequency vocab. You need to use a lot of this and pair it with good, varied grammar. Don’t use dialogue (going against Bruff here!) because a lot of mistakes can come from that.

2. Interesting phrasing. I don’t know how to phrase this but I would say do something like this, “Knowing everything I know, I wouldn’t ever do this again. The darkness is daunting and enveloping, the pit of my stomach is freakily erratic in such a way that I’ve never felt before. My eyes are wrecked; my eyes are so silently shrieking and are now losing the colour they’d always presented so vibrantly. I’ve slammed my head into the wall, wailing with my vocal chords frying themselves.”

3. A distinct idea in your head, you don’t have to plan but you should where your story is going to conclude. Have a hard hitting ending, this is the final impression. You want it to be the final gut wrenching punch, not something weak and annoying.

4. Describe vividly, use your senses. Put yourself into the story and craft it in your head, try to be more sophisticated and think if you’ve gone into it enough that you can imagine what you’ve written and only that (as sometimes we fill in the gaps ourselves and others won’t be able to do that if stuff is open to interpretation).

One of the best character descriptions I have ever read is the opening paragraph of 'Mr.Norris Changes Trains' by Christopher Isherwood. I use it with my students to show them that you don't have to write a list of physical attributes.

Hi do u have any tips of how to get better at paper 1 question 5 narrative. We never do stories in school and always do description and I never bothered with it much as I thought I'll pick the description option but I've noticed some exam papers having both options to be a story. I've tried to write a story many times but my mind is completely blank, I have no creativity and I don't even know what to write and my writing is so low level and rubbish. I also can't even think of a plot

I'm a beginner writer and have been studying fiction writing for years. Aside from the outer layers of fiction that writers sell us like outline ect...As a whole do you believe that fiction writing at its core is just 1.)Narrative POV 2.) Action Beats, Dialogue tags and Untagged lines of dialogue 3.) SOAPAIMS? I'm taking Masterclass Writing and it's all crap, respectively they are great writers but behave as car salesman never even attempting to teach your the core of fiction writing.
