Dyeing silk fabric with salt is one of the easiest silk painting techniques to create beautiful designs on a silk scarf. In this tutorial, I hand dye silk satin fabric for an infinity scarf using the salt technique to create a pattern from blues to greens, with tips for beginners to experienced silk painters. Time lapse videos at the end show the salt pattern forming.
0:08 Blending dyes with Sumi brushes
0:22 Mixing dyes
0:32 Some dyes react better to salt
0:37 Cool weather is better
0:44 Sprinkle salt & add more dye
0:59 Time Lapse salt pattern forming
1:10 Finished infinity scarves
Graduated colors of dyes are blended together on the silk with Sumi brushes and sprinkled with silk salt while dyes are still wet. The pattern forms as the dye dries, then the salt is removed, silk is steamed for 3 hours, rinsed, ironed, and we sew the fabric into a luxuriously soft and beautiful infinity scarf, which you’ll see at the end of the video.

How are you able to paint directly onto the silk without heating it in the traditional method?
