To be honest brother. I see and have taught the lesson differently because I have kids. Sometimes my son would come to and show me something creative he built, which would cause me to say, "Well done! That's amazing. I'm so proud of you. Keep doing amazing things like this."

I'd apply the exact same attitude and encouragement to my daughter and it fills them with so much joy when you verbalise your approval and encouragement.

However, I noticed my friend, whom also has a son and daughter, would go to their mom only when the other sibling has received some sort of praise and encouragement for their work completed. This would make the other kid create something and I've seen swigly lines drawn faster than lighting and then he/she would run to their mom and say, "Look at mine also mommy."

I tried to illustrate to her that this is what Cain and Abel's relationship was like. One came to hang out with their Parent to show what they've done with the gifts and blessings given to them by their Parent and in turn, like any good parent, he received a blessing of goodness, comfort and reassurance for doing what is right in the sight of the Parent.

The other kid simply acted out of jealousy. It wasn't for the Father's approval but the desire in Cain's heart was to attain the same accolade as his brother did.

God saw this, as any good parent on earth sees it and warned him several times throughout his life, to change this reaction to his brother Abel's action.

He said it would open a doorway to jealousy which would manifest itself as a demonic spirit called Murder.

So my interpretation comes from observing kids practicing this same type of jealously over each other.

One approaches the Father for His approval and blessing. And eye fixed on his Father.

The other one approaches his Father to hear his works are equal to or greater than Abel's work. An eye fixed on the brother.

"for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life" - Lev 17:11

God didn't accept Cains offering, but He also didn't punish Cain for it, He corrected Cain and gave him council in response to his offering.

It is how Cain responded to the correction that is central here. Instead of humbling himself and changing his ways, he instead persecuted the righteous.

The heart that seeks itself hates the heart that seeks after God. A theme that runs throughout the rest of Scripture and is clearly visible in this day and age.

I read it as Cain bringing God the fruit that FELL on the ground. His worst fruit, so it was rejected.

Isaiah 58 is a similar situation for fasting. Showing how important it is to not only come to God, but to do it on His terms

That's an awesome way to break down the story and help us understand the reason behind it.

Thank you! I have recently been in arguments over their story because some people believe God had no regard for Cain's offering because it was not a blood sacrifice but the text does not say it was required.

That's a really good point, it doesn't say anything about Cain bringing the first fruits, which is commanded later on of the Hebrew people if they were bringing a produce offering.
Not to mention where his heart must have been before he even brought an offering, if his offering being rejected lead to him commiting fratricide of his own brother out of jealousy.

”It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks to us by his example of faith.“
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭4‬ ‭

Some people acknowledge the power of God, but they deny the authority of God.
I was having a conversation with mother of one of my friends years ago when I was in school, about washings and purification, and how Jesus told the apostles how they were to go out and make disciples, and her answer to me was, "Is God not strong enough to save people even if they don't obey him in love?" In not so many words, that is what she said to me.
Was God not able to have Elisha wave his hand over the spot and make Naaman clean? Or course God is able, but while we cannot do anything to earn salvation, we can and must do something to accept salvation.
Namaam dipped seven times, the sinful woman washed Jesus' feet, the lame man was let down into the house by his friends, the thief on the cross rebuked the other man who reviled Christ, and we are called to allow our brother to lower us into water.
"Why do you wait? Arise and be baptized, washing away your sins, calling on his name."
Do not deny the authority of God. Rely on Christ, not works of the law (namely, the law or Moses, and specifically the law or circumcision of flesh. Circumcize your heart and offer your love in obedience to God)
We can have faith, but not have love. The Scripture calls this faith worthless.
We can have works, and lack faith, the Scripture says that such a person has fallen from grace.
We are not saved by faith alone, for faith without works is dead, and faith without love is nothing.
We need to have faith with love, which will lead us into good works and obedience to the Father. By this love we accept that though we cannot earn salvation, Christ has made us completely righteous.
Put on the wedding clothes, they have been provided free of charge, but you have to put them on. Putting on the wedding clothes does not mean that you earned them, or bought them with your own righteousness. They were bought with God's righteousness for your good.

We don't get to decide how we worship our God, only He decides that!
