I have some perspective on the "friend zone." It may not always be a problem. My brother briefly met a lovely woman at church when she and her brother came to sing. Later when he began attending a local college to study Vocal Pedagogy, they met up again and became close "friends." He began to have more romantic feelings for her, but valued her friendship, and described her as his best friend, but was debating whether or not to pursue a more serious, romantic relationship with her. Being that I was 5 years older than him, he came to me and asked my advice. My answer was short and sweet. I said, "friends can always become lovers, but lovers may not often be friends. Furthermore, if she is a woman of good character, how much better can a man do than to marry his best friend?"

To make a long story short, they've been married for 38 years, have two grown sons, both in the ministry and 7 delightful grandchildren. At the wedding reception, she came to me, hugged me and whispered in my ear, "Thank you, thank you for giving him that advice. I was feeling the same way, but didn't want to make the first move!"

The moral here is this, if you don't share a set of common values, beliefs about life, spiritual matters and goals, then after the 2-3 year honeymoon period, the relationship can degrade into a difficult one. You can "love" (be infatuated with, or lust after, but not true love), but not really like them as a person, i.e., their personality, moral character, attitudes, etc.
