In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

I’m caring for my father, who has dementia, (92yrs. old) while my mother (87 yrs.) is in the hospital. He forgets things that have occurred 10 minutes ago, but he can recall important events from the past with such detail. His dementia is tough. He forgets he’s eaten, puts on double outfits sometimes and doesn’t realize he’s overheated and to take his jacket off or to sit and rest. He obsesses about the littlest thing and gets up at night thinking it’s day. He’s gentle, kind and grateful and I’m trying to cherish every exhausting moment. Caregiving is hard work, but we know in our hearts we’ll be at peace one day knowing we did the best we could. Thanks Dr. Natalie, for your help and guidance.

My mother is 100 & has lost lots of memory in last 12 months - I was shocked last week that she had totally forgotten my sisters illness & death although remembered her name. She repeats everything every day which is so draining but cannot remember what meal she had even 2 days later, when we had a lunch at the normal coffee place & she ordered the same meal but then said it wasn’t what she had
I am finding it so hard to care for her, she insisted that she will not go into residential care even though the doctor has recommended this - her reply was - ‘you might as well kill me !!’
I am in depression myself with the situation after 7 years of caring for

Mom is 91 and lives with me. 5 weeks ago she fell and broke her leg. After spending 4 weeks in rehab/nursing home she is now back home. Her dementia is now much more worse. She having to relearn so many things. She has no idea how to work the tv remote, has forgotten even how to brush her teeth. I know she will never be like she was before the accident but I am hoping for some improvement. I continue to watch all your videos and thank you so much for your suggestions and advice.
I was looking for the live questions and answers link here and don't see it

I have been caring for step father for two years. During the past several months, things slowly started going downhill. One day he was screaming out with stomach pain. I called 911, and he is was brought to hospital, where he was diagnosed with bowel obstruction. A couple months later, he lit a cigarette with oxygen in and caught his foot on fire. Was brought to hospital with third degree burns. A week later, he fell out of bed and hit his ribs on the bottom of hospital table. He is nothing but dead weight, and there was no way I could lift him. It was 2:00 AM, he was screaming bloody murder that he thought he broke his ribs. So I called 911 again. They got him off the floor, but he then claimed there was nothing wrong and refused to go to hospital. A week later he was freaking out all night long, screaming, hallucinating, ECT. Nothing I did calmed him down. I called a nurse and she stayed with me for five hours till he finally went to sleep. I had a meltdown, crying hysterically on the floor and couldn't breathe. Nurse suggested if it happened again, to call 911. A few days later, it started all over again. I called 911 and they removed him against his will. Wouldn't you know it, the paramedics called adult protective services. He was in a nursing home for two months and was diagnosed with dementia.

Last 5 months we being adding around 12 tablespoons of coconut oil to my mother in law diet daily. She stopped complaining she hasn't eaten and went from 100lbs to 115lbs. Blood tests came fine last week.

Do people with dementia have problems staying warm or regulating body temperature? Do you have any previous videos on this? My mother-in-law keeps the temp in her house between 78-80 degrees. She can't reason that a sweater or extra blanket would help.

Can peri menopause look like dementia in a 53 year old? I struggle to remember what someone tells me at times almost as soon as they tell me and I usually have to write it down to remember so I don’t ask the same question later like “what did you say we needed from the store” ect..

My father has vascular dementia.. I don’t have any health issues but have had many surgeries requiring anesthesia (knee replacement, hernia repair ect.. total of 4) and am wondering it that could also have played a part in my short term memory being what it is

I am taking care of my 98 year old parents. Mom has Alzheimers and dads is showing signs of dementia that my mom was experience about 8 years ago. My question is, my mom always ask "wht am I suppose to be doing". I try to get her busy with crafts, coloring, playing cards, but sometimes she just says she doesn't want to to do that and walks away. I even have her folding towels or drying dishes. She wants something to do but doesn't want to do some kind of activity that I suggest

We are struggling with food issues with my bf's mom. She has Alzheimers. If she doesn't recognize it, she won't eat it. She has a bowl of cereal for breakfast, for lunch she has some fruit, potato salad, and jalapeno bread. For dinner, a Mcdonalds strawberry pie and fries. She does like an occasional piece of cherry pie, and sugar cookies. It's a horrible diet, I know, but she rejects everything else. We have a snack bag with different chex cereals in it next to her chair, and she loved them. Then, a few weeks ago, she stopped eating them. Her weight is good. We do have her on some vitamins.
