Sean, the horticulture expert at The Gardener's Center in Darien, CT, talks about two native perennials. Hydrangea and perennial milkweeds are native to the United States and some varieties are specifically Connecticut natives.

There is often debate regarding using cultivars within these groups to attract pollinators. Sean explains that while some plants are bred in ways that change the size or look of their blooms and, in turn, affect the way pollinators feed, the varieties Sean is showing us are only cultivated to be smaller and denser plants. While these may work better for smaller areas, their flower structure or their ability to be a food or pollen source for our pollinators is unchanged. So don’t count some of these guys out if you are looking to attract those pollinators!
