We were so saddened to hear about Dolores O'Riordan's sudden death a few days ago. Zombie (which she wrote) was a huge song when we were kids, we've always loved it, and it's been on our list of songs to cover for awhile. We dedicate this performance to Dolores.

Brooklyn Duo:
Marnie Laird, piano
Patrick Laird, cello

Lyrics:

Another head hangs lowly
Child is slowly taken
And the violence, caused such silence
Who are we mistaken?
But you see, it's not me
It's not my family
In your head, in your head, they are fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head they are crying
In your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What's in your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie, oh

Another mother's breaking
Heart is taking over
When the violence causes silence
We must be mistaken
It's the same old theme
Since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head, they're still fighting
With their tanks, and their bombs
And their bombs, and their guns
In your head, in your head, they are dying
In your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie
What's in your head, in your head
Zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie

Brooklyn Duo Bio:

Founded in 2014, Brooklyn Duo has quickly established itself as one of today’s most successful classical crossover ensembles. Through its creative arrangements and live video performances, the piano and cello duo has garnered a huge following, with over 500,000 YouTube subscribers, and over 150 million streams annually on platforms such as Spotify and Pandora Radio.

On a whim, the couple arranged and recorded two pop covers and released them on YouTube. Shakira noticed the duo’s cover of her song Empire and promoted it to her 130 million-plus fan base, saying: “We're loving Brooklyn Duo's piano/cello cover of Empire! Great work guys." The boost that resulted from that exposure and the positive response they were getting on YouTube encouraged the couple to continue creating videos.

Since then, Marnie and Patrick have released over 70 videos on their Brooklyn Duo YouTube channel and 7 albums of covers, spanning artists from The Beatles to Metallica to Taylor Swift (who also tweeted about them, saying their cover of her song “Blank Space” sounded "like a song people should walk down the aisle to"). In 2016, the couple started a second YouTube channel, Brooklyn Classical, with the goal of introducing classical music to a larger audience. With this new channel, Marnie and Patrick aim to showcase high quality, live performances of classical music. Brooklyn Classical often hosts high-profile guest artists, including the world-renowned Dover and Escher string quartets and percussionist Ivan Trevino.

In 2017, Marnie and Patrick partnered with Carnegie Hall and Ensemble Connect, a collective of some of the best young musicians in the U.S., to produce a cover of a-ha’s “Take On Me”. The video went viral and garnered millions of views in just a few months. Popular classical music stations Classic FM and WQXR regularly share Brooklyn Duo’s music on their social media pages, with Classic FM calling the duo “masters of the artfully planned pop cover.” One of their covers was also recently featured in an episode of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.

3:00 - 4:04 😱 The cello has completely penetrated my soul. This is crazy how a musical instrument can make you feel emotions across few notes.. I think the cello is the best musical instrument to make you feel the sadness and the pain. It hit my soul, wow. You guys are talented. Amazing cover.

As an Irish woman who grew up listening to the Cranberries thank you for this. May Dolores rest in peace now.

What's so beautiful about this duo is that you can sense the love between them, this channel is my only subscription. I wish I could find that kind of love again. This loneliness is killing me. I'd love to find that special someone with whom I can create music, since I sing, play the piano and compose my own songs. I'm 35 years old and I'm so.. jealous of these couples who have the same life goals and passions, but at the same time.. I'm so fricking happy for them.. I'm just like.. Where do they find each other? This couple makes these songs so beautiful that it makes me cry.

Brooklyn Duo's piano and cello covers are some of the most amazing that I have ever heard. They hit the heart. All their covers make you feel all the emotions a song has. It makes you hear the talents behind the artist of the original. Not every song can sound good in a cover with a piano and cello. But an artist that can create a song that sounds amazing no matter how it is played is an artist worth applauding

The way the cello sounds is simply human, the performance it’s amazing but the way this instrument transmits sensations is out of this world. Can’t be more proud of being a cello player. You two rock!!!

The cello is soo on point, and the tenderness in the piano is something I only wish I could aspire to as a very average pianist. Well done guys, that was beautiful.

Why am I crying? What’s this feeling? Can we have people like this play for children in schools. This was just amazing

The way these two lose their sh*t while playing this (in the best way possible) is so amazing to watch! What an awesome feeling it is to completely lose yourself in the music. So beautiful to watch!

The juxtaposition of the cars flying by right outside the window while they are making incredible music is in and of itself art. You can see the emotion and love for the music in their body language. To be able to see these two different words simultaneously is amazing.

Thank you so much for paying such a beautiful tribute to my sister Irishwoman, Dolores O'Riordan. I was deeply touched. It is
a beautiful arrangement and played with such feeling. The playing on both instruments is wonderfully poignant but, on this occasion,
I have to say that I was so impressed and humbled by Marnie's piano playing. Also, as I suspect you had not arranged *Zombie* before - you did a wonderful job on arranging and performing it so promptly. It is a fitting tribute to a talented artist but I know that Dolores herself, would be terribly chuffed at the idea of Juillard Posgraduates paying tribute to her!!
The origins that created *Zombie* are very moving and very brave too. It was, as I'm sure most of your readers will know, written by Dolores to pay tribute to the brutal killing of two young boys in Warrington in the UK by the IRA. Following her death, the father of one of the boys paid a most moving tribute to Dolores for her enduring musical tribute to his son, Timmy.
Rest in Pace Dolores - your music lives on, not least by Brooklyn Duo. Again my thanks from all of us in Ireland.
Mary, Dublin, Ireland.

I've never heard a piece of music that moved me to the point of uncontrollable tears, yet I'm not sure if they are coming from joy or sadness, such divine connection to your instruments... what an experience.

I cannot stop listening to this fantastic arrangement. The deep bass note played on the piano at about 4:03 and 4:10 were magnificently timed and perfect. The cellist's performance is off the charts. Just an incredible duet and display of talent. Must go back now for an encore!
