Belegis is located in the eastern part of Srem, on the right bank of the Danube, about 36 km north of Belgrade. It is located on the territory of the municipality of Stara Pazova. Belegis fishing grounds are among the most famous in the region. Belegis was founded in the 16th century, when 23 families moved to the right bank of the Danube. They built a small church made of wicker, covered with reeds. In 1731, another, more modern church was built. At that time, the village already had 230 houses. As the Danube carried away the bank on which the other church stood, the walls began to crack and sink into the ground. The current church in Belegiš is the third to be built since the village was founded. The church has two towers and is the largest in the Srem diocese, built in 1927, in the center of the village. During the Second World War, Belegis was a partisan base.
