Scottish Reaction To Portugal 🇵🇹

I'm in Lisbon, Portugal. In today's episode of Scottish Reaction To, I give some first impressions of Portugal and life in Lisbon.

Lisbon is one of my favourite cities and Portugal one of my favourite countries to travel to. Food is a big reason for this, but I love the Portuguese people, the weather and the views.

Shaun, I discovered your vlog about two years ago when I was doing research for my first trip outside the USA...to Portugal! Lisbon is a great city, so much to see and do and taste...very overwhelming to someone from small-town America. Only one person approached me selling drugs, thank goodness. Sintra was very interesting, with loads of history and fantastic scenery. I'm not much of a beach person, but I LOVED Nazaré; I was there in October 2016, and it was quaint and charming and relaxing, and the people there were so friendly. Porto was really cool, too. Looking forward to going back one day!

Shaun, -- about the temperature of the water on the Atlantic coast, in Portugal: the reason why the water is so cold is not because of some North-South maritime current but because Portugal is much further North than most people realize (the center is around 40 degrees North). If you were to fly from, say, Chicago, in the USA, eastwards over the Atlantic, with no deviation from that parallel (around 41 degrees North), you would land in the city of Porto, in northern Portugal! The reason why we don't have, on land, the kind of artic temperatures in the wintertime typical of the interior-north of the United States is mainly due to the Jet Stream, which brings milder temperatures from the Gulf od Mexico across the Atlantic, pretty much the same reason why much of the coastal regions of Northern Europe don't experience regularly the kind of more severe winters of continental Europe. Of course, this is a bit of a somewhat simplistic explanation, climate being a lot more complex than one realizes! Cool vid, BTW!

Drugs are decriminalized which basically means you can not go to jail for the use of drugs, you can get a fine or something it's still forbiden but you can not go to jail. However, selling drugs is still a crime.

This year the sea water is colder than usual, about 4ºC lower, but if you want to swim near Lisbon it's better to go to Troia, 30Km south of Lisbon.
Troia is a fantastic beach.

We do have an amazing array of pastries :D Not as beautiful and classy as french pastry, but delicious! And it changes throughout the country, so you need to visit other cities in Portugal ;) But you got that right, most of our pastries have eggs in them, mostly egg yolks, since the whites were used to take care of clothes on monastaries (where most of our pastries came from). So, the sweets were a way of zero waste before it was even talked about :D

Welcome back to Portugal! So glad you enjoy it... have you travelled to other parts of Portugal? Lisbon and that zone around is very nice but there is a lot more for you to find out and very different from Lisbon, even the food and nature. All the best on you travels!

Shaun, you should visit the North. Porto, and up in the east in Minho, and in the west, is very green & Celtic. Many of our fire festivals, dances and work life are all to this day, very Celtic. Glad you like Lisbon & Portugal.

I'm glad you liked Lisbon but as a Portuguese, I would say that's not even the best part. There is so much more to see! You've got to go to Azores (São Miguel Island), Sagres and Costa Vicentina, Tavira, Aveiro... Great weather, food, and landscapes. If yo want warm water, go to Algarve at the end of September!! :) Btw, I am planning on visiting Edinburgh next year :)
