The UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak, arrived early with is wife, Akshata Murty, to cast their ballots at a polling station in Richmond and Northallerton, the seat Sunak is competing for in North Yorkshire.

The Labour leader, Keir Starmer, later arrived at a polling station in the London constituency of Holborn and St Pancras with his wife, Victoria, as voting in the general election got underway
