Both. Mostly we live in a Brave New World with mindless and mind numbing social media & entertainment . But if you step out of line you’ll see the gore of the 1984 jackboot

I’ve always thought:

USA / EU = Brave New World
China / Russia = 1984

Most other underdeveloped nations have a combination of both, but at the moment, it’s more geared toward brutal, unsustainable repression. However, I do think the more developed a society, the more they’ll be geared toward a BNW dystopia, as the 1984 society can’t sustain itself without an impending social upheaval(s).

We’re already past 1984. A Brave New World is where we are.

“What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny ‘failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions.’ In 1984, Huxley added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us.”

From the foreword to ‘Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business’ Neil Postman (1985)

A Brave New World level, 1st world dystopia (e.g. the USA/EU) can only be sustained by a 2nd/3rd world level 1984 style dystopia which likewise can only be sustained with the promise of riches from the former. It's a symbiotic relationship; you cannot have one without the other for an extended period.

Aldous Huxley wrote an essay entitled BRAVE NEW WORLD: REVISITED, 27 years after the novel (Brave New World). The essay provides a comprehensive update and assessment on the state of affairs in society. Still worth reading.

It's 1984, Brave New World, Atlas Shrugged, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver and Infinite Jest all rolled into one.

I love how these conversations add another dimension to the perceived personality of someone. People like Knowles get trapped in the narratives their typical youtube audience wants, so it's nice that you help them break free from that. Shapiro is a good example of this. I really can't be bothered to watch his show: it's basically the same thing day-in and day-out, but give him a chance to have a conversation, and the content is far more interesting. You've got a great channel here, Chris. Thanks.

We are going to need to write a new book soon.

As it turns out, even Christopher Hitchens remarked upon this fact back in 2010 or so, when he said, as great as Orwell is, Huxley rings true more and more. Namely, with regards to the information drowning, if I can recall -- and this is undeniable, of course.

i was disgusted by the overwhelming amount of sexual stuff all over the place even as a little this point im just disgusted by sex outright...and once i met the girl that noticed it as well i felt relief that i wasnt alone in all this, once you see all the crap you simply cant unsee it anymore and its stressfull because of all the other people who look at it but dont see it and they just give themselves up, if you tell them how bad something is for them they just treat you as a lunatic

'90-10' in favor of Huxley's conception of dystopia probably only applies to the first world (although it's more likely 65-35) - in which a small minority of the world's population resides. Completely different story in the Global South.

I’ve always thought Brave New World was more realistic because people will go to such great lengths to stay comfortable

Quite literally found this immediately after finishing Brave New World. I needed to go to somewhere with people who read and understand this book. Thank god I found this video!

Depends on what part of the world or econmic ladder you are on - even within the same country, if you are lower economic, the increasing government intrusion will seem like 1984 - while at same time those in higher econmoic status will succome to brave new world aspects of same government.

We probably should add some “Idiocracy” into that NWO mix, too.
