FLAT OUT (The History of Rally) - Episode 10 - The French Revolution

FLAT OUT is the video series covering the history of rally from its beginnings way back in the 19th century, its evolution and where it is today, all the while looking at some of the greatest cars, drivers and stages to grace the worldwide sport.

Episode 10 covers roughly the years of 2000 - 2004. The World Rally Car ruleset had been implemented late in the last century, and without the binding contract of homologation specials to worry about, the Europeans were now being inclined to return to the dirt after many years' absence. Would they finally be able to crush the Japanese stronghold?

Really glad we're onto my favourite era of the sport! Does feel like some things are missing, but it also paints the picture quite well of how the rallying landscape was shaping up competition wise. I feel some things that should be added in are the changing regulations onto the sport, with how the format of the rallies changed and became less of a marathon event and more of a sprint, less of a trek across the country/region and more locked around the service park format.

At the same time, I'm really glad for the inclusion of the other categories, often the smaller categories are overlooked in massive ways, so it's really good to know just what was happening below that led to the shape-ups above. And although there are omissions there (such as how Skoda and Hyundai and Seat were competing in the F2 category before moving up to the WRC, and the emmergence of the hatchback as the defining car shape, which led to the introduction of the Fabia replacement), the series still strikes a pretty good balance w the information it gives!

Good job overall, I'm hoping for more episodes! :D

By far my favorite era of rally is around 1974 with group 4 - 1986 with group b.

5:00 the Impreza WRC2001 only won the title 2001 with Burns, not two. The WRC2003 (blob-eye) won in 2003 with Petter Solberg.

5:10 "Citroen had a more extensive in the preceding years" - nope. Both Citroen and Peugeot competed in the 2 litre cup together, just that Peugeot moved to the WRC with the 206 a little earlier.

5:21 You're history on the Xsara WRC is a bit off here. Citroen undertook 2 partial championship years in 2001 and 2002 with the Xsara WRC before committing to the championship full time in 2003. It never displayed a "rocky start" - nor was Loeb the headline driver in 2003, he was the third driver to McRae and Sainz but ended up besting both.

7:42 The JWRC did not have all cars identical until 2011 when it was converted to the Academy model where M-Sport supplied Fiestas. You show footage a lot of Suzuki Ignis's, but you had Ford, Citroen, Suzuki, MG, FIAT, Renault, Peugeot, VW, Opel all homologate S1600 cars for the JWRC between 2001 and 2010.
