JavaScript was created by Brendan Eich over a span of 10 days in May 1995 while he was at Netscape Communications Corporation. Originally named Mocha, it was later renamed to LiveScript and finally to JavaScript, capitalizing on the burgeoning popularity of Java at the time.

Eich designed JavaScript to be a lightweight scripting language that allowed web designers to easily add interactivity to websites. Its simplicity and versatility quickly caught the attention of developers, who began leveraging it to build more sophisticated web applications.

In response to the growing influence of JavaScript, Microsoft released JScript in 1996, a JavaScript-compatible language for Internet Explorer. This spurred the need for a standardized scripting language, leading to the creation of the ECMAScript standard by the European Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) in 1997.
