Why the 2nd Gen Chevrolet C10 Changed America’s Idea of a Truck

The 2nd Generation of the Chevrolet C/10 pickup trucks built between 1967 and 1972 marked a distinct change in the way that consumers thought about what a truck could be. Where the first-generation of C/10 trucks built from 1960-1966 were pure workhorses that offered little in the way of personal comfort, the 2nd Generation trucks, were tailored for both work and play by offering options that delivered drivers usability as well as comfort.

For the 2nd generation trucks, various model and trim packages were now available along with optional niceties such as a tilt steering column, molded door panels with integrated armrests, carpet and even an AM/FM radio and air conditioning. Their mission was to balance out that work / play lifestyle, and for the first time in American pickup truck history, it was being accomplished. On this episode of TESTED presented by American Collectors Insurance, Mike Musto jumps behind the wheel of a pristine 1972 Chevrolet Custom/10 that’s been owned by the same family since new, to see just how good the Chevrolet C10 really is.

I'm so glad I stumbled onto this video. I am just finishing up the restoration on my 1970 C10 that my dad passed down to me. My great grandfather was the original owner of the truck and it was also bought at Camanche Chevrolet in Santa Rosa CA as the truck highlighted in this video was. I'm keeping it mostly original with some slight modifications.

I drive a 01 Silverado that is the comparable model to this I suppose. It is black, 2dr, 2wd, shortbed fleetside with a the V8 5.3 (327). I drove it off the James Wood Chevrolet lot in Denton, TX on the evening of May 1, 2001. Still daily drive it, although I don't have as much of a commute much anymore and don't take it on as many trips because I can't get my kids in it. It's got about 245k miles on it, pretty much everything still original on it. I had to replace the head gasket on it about a year ago and the mechanic said keep this truck forever because it will be a classic someday. I am not sure if it will the classic a 72 is, but I do get lots of compliments on it. Heck of lot easier to work on than modern trucks, but still not as easy as the earlier trucks.

I also drive a 2021 Silverado for work, but it is a extended cab 4x4 and silver.

I love these trucks. It's a shame that most of them have been lowered to the point of impracticality

My 1971 C10 Custom doesn’t have a tachometer, did the 1972 come with one. Bought mine in 1973 and has been in Sonoma county since then.
