As I responded to a comment below, think of this difference:
"He writes lots of poetry"
"He writes poetry a lot".
In the first sentence I would paraphrase by saying that He writes many poems altogether, for example in his spare time: He writes lots of poetry in his spare time. While the second one it means that He writes poems very often, which could be one every day, or every two days or three, etc...
I think there's a subtle difference between both uses, any thoughts?
