How to Paint Metallic Blades on Warhammer Miniatures

How I typically approach painting blades with metallic paints. This is something I used to struggle with, untill I saw Juan Hidalgo using 'Gryph-Charger Grey' to shade them, in his excellent full length video on the subject.

I personally like to start with a slightly darker basecoat, go darker with the shading and finish with a specific silver. However, the introduction of the blue-ish colour really makes these blades stand out to me.

If you wanted a more neutral tone, you could experiment with using 'Basilicanum Grey' instead. I've even played with the idea of using 'Gore-Grunta Fur' and then 'Wyldwood' for some dirty Ork blades. This is an experiment for another day though.

Thanks for watching! I hope you will find it useful.

i think it looks really good dont get me wrong. Id be very happy to have a painted mini like that. But ive never understood the shading on blades. Why is it that there is shaded areas on opposing corners like that? If you look at a sword, and this is what ive done with my mini, looked at blades that i have from different angles, that type of shadow never appears. Like one corner of the blade might have a less shiny area but its usually only one corner and never opposing corners. Usually, if i paint blades that have a shine from the created light point of our choosing, like zenith highlighting, thats how you can tell where the shadow will be and on what corner.

Im a newer model painter but ive been tattooing and painting for years And thats where im drawing my experiences from so maybe its just a disconnect because its a different canvas and style that has a culture built into it.

I don’t care if it’s cheating but I just machine metal parts now.
