the difference between vst & vst3

VST3 only consumes CPU resources when the plugin is in use. This is different from VST, which is “always on”. It is therefore possible to have a bigger range of VST3 plugins installed because they won't be consuming your computer's CPU resources until you activate them.

I've been "producing" for like 5+ years and I never bothered to figure this out. Thanks for being straight to the point. Easy subscribe from me!

Thanks, Zane, for these videos. I'm just starting out and most of the channels I subscribe to are more advanced. Your channel is perfect for giving me the foundational knowledge I need to get up and running.

As for the Macs - the AU "seems" to load faster...almost as if it were ready.

I'm a waveform user on a AMD 64 CPU. VST3s work fine, but most of the other 64 bit pluggins make the sound engine crash pretty much all the time.

Forgot Linux!! But great post. The format of choice for a Linux DAW is LV2, (LADSPA v2), it’s open source. Linux OS pretty much runs the fastest 500 supercomputers in the world (except ones which are hardware based i.e. FPGA/ASIC). Expect a new plugin format for the quantum computing age.

Ok, so, thus far, the default on all the VST's I've installed was to install several versions. I use Reaper on Windows. How do I find and get rid of unnecessary duplicates?

To the AU, there's no benefit to VST, so I recommend to use the VST or VST3 version, because this means you can send them to someone else who works on windows or if for whatever reason you switch to windows in the future your projects will work on the new system, too. However there's one more Format wich may become more interesting in the future it's AUv3, which is a newer version of AU, but works on Mac and iOS, this is getting really interesting now that on the M1 Macs you can run iOS Apps, so if a DAW supports this Format it means you can use your iOS-AUs inside it, however right now Logic is the only that that supports this format as far as I know.

I wish I saw this video sooner. I have been downloading plugins as of late and I download everything that's offered (Vst3, vst2, etc.) since I thought I needed everything. Do you know how I can delete everything except for the Vst3 versions? Thanks!

Thanks for all of your videos. Do you have a recommendation for a simple (for voice editing), preferably free editor that can handle Waves plugins? All new ones are 64 bit, I think VST3, so Audacity will not recognize them, and some other editors seem like overkill.

I downloaded a vst3 file named valhallaSupermassive.Vst3 but I can't open it in waveform, what to do?
