The fact that 13-18 year olds are competing and producing some ingenious results does in fact give me hope for the future of mankind. It doesn't matter if someone else thought of it before, what matters is that someone did it.

I'm pretty sure that this kids had help from other people without a doubt. But for these kids to fully understand and built or synthesize something from scratch. That is amazing in itself. I mean the kid who CREATED A NEW WAY to fight an incurable disease is crazy. If you watch the big band theory he is the equivalent of a sheldon.

It's great that many young people are inventing things that may help us. Unfortunately, it will take many years to see these things out in the market for you and me.

You are right. These people are promoted by their parents/tutors. It actually involves a very complicated process where many people are benefited economically and (maybe politically) from these kids being sponsored... and at the same time, helping these kids have a free/cheap, easy entry to a prestige university...

How does Google make sure it is not the parents invention? These remind me of the 6 year old who won the Google art contest with a genuine masterpiece.

You're right but I also don't think we should lose sight of the good things these people are doing. It's not right to say they don't deserve any credit just because they did somthing somone else COULD or MIGHT have been able to do but wasn't able to.

Of course, it will inspire and challenge you to push yourself to be your best. If you are one of those people who purely crave knowledge and improve humanity as a whole. Then no, you are not normal, you are a gifted individual. Take pride in it.

Those kids really put time into their work. I'm sure there would be alot more if we all had the budget to keep going! ^_^

Batteries are just an energy source. Candles don't last forever, eventually either the wick or the wax will run out of chemical energy. This flashlight, in layman's terms, absorbs energy from your body heat and the air around you therefore would never run out of energy.

Whenever I would ask to learn about something, my parents would respond along the lines of "take a class on it in college." I tend to be someone who learns very quickly and understands things very well, so this has been terrible for me because, until I finally got internet access at home in 7th grade, I was wasting almost all that time by not learning. Now a significant portion of what I do on the internet is research since I wasn't able to learn very much before I had it.

The previous generation was like this as well and they still did great things so I don't see how this is surprising...

Hell yeah! We as the human race need to promote this kind of brilliance more often.

#1 (that is number, not hashtag children) everyone who has a car does not always have a cell phone or anything that would let them know that an ambulance is coming if done through cellular, and pedestrians also must be kept in mind. (loud noise and light work, the cell thing would cause mass ignore).
#2 kinda works for passive survival lights, but i would trust a shake light in cold weather more.
#3; i am curious.

these numbers are in the order presented. and i made no comment on the bonus.
