Frances Ha - Authenticity in Cinematography

Noah Baumbach is one of my favourite directors, and it seems as though, as time has gone on, he’s only become a better director, however, Frances Ha seems to be the film of his that just can’t be topped. It's his only film photographed in Black & White, Frances is one of the best characters he and Gerwig have ever written, and more than anything, it's a comfortable film to watch.

So, in Wednesday's video, I’ll be covering the look and how it compares to his other films, the use of lighting and composition to tell a story, as well as the equipment Sam Levy opted for, as it was a very interesting choice.

As always if you have a recommendation for an analysis, let me know below!

Timeline:
00:00 Introduction
00:50 The Look
03:28 Lighting + Composition
04:57 Equipment
06:24 Conclusion

Music:
Claude - Danya Vodovoz
Island Dream - Chris Haugen
Far The Days Come - Letter Box
Glacier - Chris Haugen
Dance of the Sugar Plums - Tchaikovsky

Very inspiring that the Canon 5D M2 was picked as the camera.
Thinking and talking so much about the gear, overcomplicating everything by spending a lot of money on camera equipment can sometimes limit a movie in its potential instead of expanding it.

PERFECT TIMING! I watched this film for the first time yesterday. Before that I never heard of it before. Then I see you post this video today! Nice coincidence!
