Spring came early this year!! Which means the honey flow is coming SOON! This year I am exploring the realm of how to hit the flow the best that I can. And, in order to do that you need to have a hive jam packed full of bees. But, how do you make your hive jam packed full of bees? You get your queen to lay more eggs! Now how do you get your queen to lay more eggs???? Here are my theories! What are yours?!

Where do you get your flexible innercover material?

What about moving brood? Do you ever “strengthen “ a colony that way?

Emily, a box of foundation gets ignored even by a strong hive. Move some brood up to invite the bees in the upper boxes, then start to checkerboard to draw comb. Today was madness standing in the middle of a 3-4 lb swarm. Setting up a finisher, moving brood around in the hive it was defensive; some boxes are set-up to keep the queen pumping out brood for nuc production splits and to draw comb.

So if you find a queen cell (the kind that they want to replace their queen not swarm cell) what do you do? Do you give them a new queen??

*Great video. Genetics defiantly play a role in buildup. My flow just started. This is an exciting time of the year :)*

I have 1 hive that is a single hive and new queen that is laying a lot. I have an excluder and then a super full of bees, but the bottom deep is about to explode. My other hive is in process of making a new queen and not as many bees, so I took a frame from full hive and put in weaker hive, then put an empty frame in the stronger hive. Is this ok to keep doing this for a little while? I make sure I find the queen in the stronger hive first, though.

Bees like to fill outer frames with honey because the honey acts as a thermal buffer, protecting the inner frames from rapid changes in temperature. That helps the bees maintain a steady, ideal temperature in the brood without expending as much energy heating and cooling.

Your girls didn’t look excited to be inspected in the rain! Our hives gained about 30lbs this week with the white clover, crimson clover, privet, tulip poplar and youpon holly all blooming right now. Peak flow for us is usually end of June but we typically can pull a few supers to harvest in a month to help span the gap for our honey customers. Thanks for sharing!

Just a thought: as the top box gets filled with brood the queen will move down into the lower box to continue to lay . About the time she finishes laying in the bottom box she will move back up into the top box . This allows her to relay into the open cells the brood emerged from . If the frames have a complete ring of honey across every brood frame then the queen will not cross that line of honey . Like you said, you have to move frames up or down in order to open up space for the queen to keep laying. But did you realize that splitting those large colonies (5 Frame ) splits you can make twice as many hives . Let those five frame splits raise their own queens. Setup an apiary one mile from where you have the majority of your bees . That other apiary will produce enough drones to create a congressional area for virgin queens to find . Some folks will use one drone frame per hive to produce a lot of drones for mating. Keep those vids coming. You’re awesome!

yes early spring here in NYC...there was a bit of a micro flow, but it is now been cooler and will be for next 10 days. My hives bumped up and have now put on the brakes a bit. Our flow is normally early-mid May to July 4th, and thats it. The lucky years we get a flow in the fall. I only did one split so far. I like to have them all done by Mother's Day, that seems to be the time they like to swarm.

I have a dead out . Would using the old brood frames in second box be the way to go to build up fast?

Face vs bottom doesn't always mean supercedure vs swarm. I run screen bottom boards in SWFL and all my Swarm cells are made on the top of frames.

FYI, bees don’t like dark colours. You should wear brightly coloured gloves.

Michiganders I love that💙😁💛Super cool how the bees actually Recognize their keeper and not like it when a new keeper takes over I had no idea they really do function like dogs🤯Still amazed that the worker bees really are in charge and if they don't like a queen they'll literally depose her and get a new one that's Incredible! Worker bees Definitely do not get enough credit....I work in a warehouse and that reminds me of Us who are toiling away and no one thinks twice about us But we are the ones on the front lines doing all the work just like ur winged friends😊🐝👏Well Thank U for another Great and Informative and Entertaining video my Favorite Keeper and I'm So Happy even your "weak" hive is doing so well, Spring has Definitely Sprung and I could not be more excited for this year for U! Hope ur doing well and I will see U in the next one my Awesome friend you really are #thebeesknees💛 #beefitbeekeeping #beefitapiary #beefitbeeyard #beefithoney #beefit #beekind💛
