Yes as a horse owner for over forty years you should never feed black locust because it can cause colic, another deadly thing you never want around your horses or pasture is
" Red Maple " it's leaves are deadly, you have to be especially careful in the fall when the wind blows these leaves around. Thank you Art for your update!!!

I’m so glad you posted this! I was looking around our farm today for black locust to give our goats. I’m with you, I would have totally trusted information from a university.

I had heard of black walnut being toxic to horses. Never heard of black locust

Wow.. Great job, thanks. I have done my research on toxic plants after my toddler ate some berries from a unidentified beautiful nightshade plant growing on our fence. I too have lots of black locust trees. My kids skin the bark off and make it into cord/rope.

A lot of tree leaves (e.g. cherry) are toxic when the leaves wilt as the wilting process generates cyanide. The same leaves are nutritious and non toxic when fresh. Horses get sick by eating leaves off branches that fell a few days before but can eat the same leaves on the tree without issues.

Since the same university is providing conflicting information on their website, perhaps you could contact them directly and get this cleared up. Generally university professors etc. respond to inquiries.

All parts of black locust is supposedly poisonous except the flowers, so it is said. My chickens devour the flowers when there in bloom with no ill effects. Also though I had two lambs die from eating locust leaves.

you should try create your own organic pig feed.a relative of ours is a millionaire just by selling organic chicken feed.he’s the middleman.he’s the one i borrow limitless platinum, pitch black credit cards when i need one.all i have to say is he looks like Brad Pitt in 45 degrees angle and he’ll be lending me his credit card in less than a second.then i shop like crazy and tell the cashiers it’s my Dad’s card and he’s asleep in the parking lot.those cashiers are always looking for the parents it’s so annoying.anyways, the feed producer/creator’s way lots richer than him.land, you have lots of.maximize it.or maybe try raising cows the Japanese way.feeding them organic stuff, making them drink beer, playing them classical music while giving them cows a massage.all for excellent meat for those who can afford.or maybe make bacons and sell them.my classmate said that her Mum only buys bacons that’s been smoked using apple wood and the pig’s been fed only with organically produced vegetables.
my uncle owns a vast farmland and he is mega rich.his son is newly married, like 2 years, and he and his wife have to quit their teaching jobs at senior high school because their online organic veggies, fruits, jams, nuts, honey etc. is doing so well.their lands have 4 seasons, too.summer, fall, winter, spring.but they’ve maximize their land’s potential.you have a happy family life and rich in love and care.but you and your friends can also be financially rich if you want to.
i’m planning purchase lands in places where cacao trees will grow.because the chocolates is nearing extinction for lack of cacao trees.i’m saving my lunch money for my land and cacao trees.the basics i’ve learned from the people around me, the law of supply and demand.problem is my parents will surely not allow me leave Japan.this is one of the safest place on earth but cacao trees will not grow here like coconut trees.it’s reality i won’t be able grow them in pots or vinyl houses.maybe i can but the cost of keeping those vinyl houses warm will be so great my chocolate will prolly cost 1, 000USD per 50 gms. bar

the problem is that the internet could misleading people, in a short sentence go around a world, without explanation. yes, it is right black locust has a chemical component, robin and robinin, which could be find all part of tree, but not the same amount. There is more examination, and scientific paper and research in USA in which measure amount of these in different part of tree, and even different circumstances and different development stage, and after different process. but because black locust has a high protein content, just like alfafa, it could be problem if you give to your animal to much. alfafa also has different chemical compound. The leaf of black locust has a lowest content of robinin, and robin. Endangers depend of amount. Protein is important for animal, but in case ruminant like cow and goat the ratio alfafa or black locust leaf vs other plant is very important, if you gives too much protein they will lost their weight, and died. Diet need balance.
