Something i think is worth looking into is "Heat shrink tubing" its basically a little black tube you can cut to the width of your wheel, slide it over the wheel, and use a lighter to shrink it around the wheel. It takes maybe 5 minutes for the entire process and makes plastic wheels look so much better, I bought a 127pc pack at harbor frieght for 4.99 and its a great way to make the plastic wheels viable especially because there isn't a real rider equivalent of BBS LM or trispoke wheels yet.

Thanx for the short axle tip. I've tried the bending technique but Hot Wheels axles are extremely strong and getting a good bend at the end doesn't always work out 😉. 👍👍

When I was in my early teens I used to make a lot of Airfix models. My neighbour and I were mad on them. We then started "modding" all our Micro Machines with custom paint jobs. Never got around to doing hotwheels until now. Getting back in to the model hobby is so cathartic. Buying some cheap assorted wheel packs off ali express for peanuts and just sitting with some music on is bliss. So far I've done a 2015 mx5, 2011 WRX, A Skyline R30 and just today picked up a couple of the ID cars, Silvia and RX7. Gonna need a large display space soon.

Great tutorial. And to respond to your wheel swap question, I have some old Matchbox MK4 Supras and FD RX7s that need some restoration love.

I hear ya on not bothering with tapping and using screws. Bits wear out super fast. There are 2 other ways to adjust axel size. Cutting and crimping (the cut side) to shorten the axel. Buying 3 piece axels to extend. Another way which I haven’t tried is to buy beads (from art supply sections) that fit on existing axels which you’d glue… presumably both ends to match.

Helpful video! I have ordered some wheels for some swaps of my HWs from 20+ years ago. Question about the aluminum tubing: What do you use to cut them down to size? I’m afraid using pliers might crimp the tubing.

Nice job, can you do a video or just tell us about your latest favorite custom and/or swap that you have done? Or show/tell us about one that surprised you? Like it turned out better than you’d expect or you found some type of wheel that looks good on a particular casting that you may not have considered without trying a bunch of different wheels first. Keep up the great work

I bought the mainline ghoul high car just for the purple wheels. I also like the mainline clear wheels in colors when I'm going for a color theme. For rubber wheels I get them assorted on ebay
