My second Pound Poodle bonded herself to me in the time it took her to go from her cage at the shelter to the get acquainted room. In the room, all seven pounds of her sat on my foot and wouldn’t budge.
Since she was sick when I adopted her, the first thing we did was to stop at my vet’s to have the staff check her out. The moment she was lifted out of my arms at the vet, she started crying for me. She still hates being separated from me and suffers terribly from separation anxiety.
Although at first, she was scared to death of strangers, now as long as I’m around, she’s become super outgoing with people. I’m so proud of her conquering her fears and becoming friendly.
My first Pound Poodle jumped in bed with me that first night she came home. I still miss her.
Oh, a Pound Poodle is a rescue Poodle. All dogs are awesome!

We adopted a rescue who had been severely abused. It took her 5 months to start trusting us. We gave her space and she started to interact with us on her own schedule. We’ve had her 5 years now and she has become our baby girl. Though noises, strangers, other dogs, and children still cause her to regress and retreat to her safe place. We call it her clubhouse. Lord only knows what happened to her in the past, that causes her to recall those hard core memories. In spite of her still clinging to those memories. She has learned to trust us and has become our little love bug on her terms.

Some good advice, however, it is also important to know that dogs are very much pack animals and feel safest when they have a strong "pack leader". So collaboration is good but they do like to know that the new "owner" is going to be strong and protect them if there is danger.

We got a rescue last July. It has taken her a long time to even cuddle up. She finally is coming up in my bed to be petted. She will not come up on my lap when I am not in bed. But she has made real progress considering where she came from. Funny but she does follow me everywhere. I guess I am her pack leader.

Just adding my pet peeve, don't hug and kiss your new dog right away! Primates hug and kiss, most other mammals don't, and don't understand the behavior. Don't invade their space. When your dog has bonded with you and feels safe, they will adapt to being hugged and kissed because they understand it gives you pleasure.
