Bacterial vaginosis is a common bacterial infection caused by an imbalance of the natural bacteria in your vagina. Here we have Dr Daniel Atkinson, the Clinical Lead at Treated, to tell us what bacterial vaginosis is and how you can treat it.

When certain bacteria in the vagina grow out of control, it can cause an imbalance that leads to an infection – called bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis symptoms can include unusual discharge with a strong fishy smell, or a change in the appearance of your discharge (for example it might become thin and watery, or take on a grey-white colour). But it doesn’t always cause symptoms – and there’s no soreness or itching like there can be with other infections in your vagina. To treat bacterial vaginosis you’ll take an antibiotic (like metronidazole or clindamycin) in the form of an oral tablet, or topical gel or cream you insert into your vagina. These stop the bacteria responsible from spreading more, and rebalances the bacteria in your vagina.
