Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of the GameShark for the Nintendo 64 from InterAct.

Want to cheat at Star Fox 64 or GoldenEye 007? It's okay, we've all been there. And with the GameShark, you can do that. Plug your favorite Nintendo 64 cartridge into the GameShark and then stick the GameShark into your Nintendo 64. It's that simple. The device opens a menu from which you can choose any number of cheat codes. Some offer simple cheats, such as extra lives or weapons, and some get into more game-breaking areas. Want to instantly win at Mario Kart 64? The GameShark allows that. You big cheater. The GameShark supports most of the major N64 games and features several different cheats per game. In this video, we show it in action in Star Fox 64 and Mario Kart 64.

This video review features video gameplay footage of the GameShark for the Nintendo 64 and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.

Another cool thing is you can play Japanese N64 games without modding your N64.

The sound of it hitting the table over and over was the best part. 10/10

Derek failed to mention that import Japanese games work on the US N64 via GameShark without console mods.

I liked using the GS to jump over the kid blocking the woods in OoT before getting a sword and shield, and I liked passing through the door of time to become adult Link without meeting the princess or anything. Then jumping over the castle guards after Zelda had left the castle, only to find she is still inside.

So I bought it this for the PS1 when I was small. I thought that it'll let you play all the games that were listed. So you can imagine my disappointment.

Wow, an n64 Gameshark that still works. I could never keep one for more than 6 months without it crapping out back in the day.

I love the Gamesharks, Action Replays, and Codebreakers. They're great for unlocking stuff in games that are too annoying to unlock the regular way. Or for just going crazy with infinite health or whatever the 2nd time through a game.

Loved the fact on later models you could create your own codes

I used to have a GameShark Pro which let you make your own codes (it came with a VHS that explained how). It was super easy to use. I went through 3 or 4 of them though because after a few months they'd just stop working.

Loved Gamesharks so much. Those were the coolest things in the world. I had one for the PS2. Don't remember much about it, except that I used an Infinite Health cheat on Spider-Man 2 to jump off the Empire State building over and over again without swinging. Hours and hours of endless fun.

I never understood why a lot of people actually hate when others cheat in single player games. I never use infinite lives or anything, but I always had fun with the more obscure codes like debug.

The debug code in FF7/8 and some other RPGs where worlds in themselves. NOTHING made sense in them and you had to talk to random people and select different options to do different things i.e. watch a particular cutscene whenever you wanted. They even had FAQs for some debug menus.

Such good memories. The shape of that device is etched into my brain.

The fact that you can easily ignore the region lock of the n64 is probably the best part.

My Favoourite feature of the N64 Gameshark and most cheat devices is the ability the play import games from Japan that would otherwise be Region locked.

Great review, but with no disrespect, it doesn't do the GameShark enough justice.

Take it from someone who used to have one, and tragically lost it many years back. THIS THING IS FUN! I used to also own a Game Genie for SNES. You are hacking, breaking games, doing things you never thought possible, you should probably have one of these by default with your system. What can I say? MOAR POSSIBILITY = MOAR FUNZ. If you are still a fan of the 64 and respect the games for it, and want to reintroduce some classic titles, get a GameShark, look up some codes, and start having some fun. The only thing this review doesn't do is emphasize enough the power and potential for this damn thing. I remember a damn VHS video came with my GameShark with some British guy teaching you how to use it, and constantly repeating, "Eight Megabyte RAM expander" (picture that said like a Brit). That is the whole reason I acquired one of those RAM expanders in the first place for my Nintendo 64. Nevermind that you can play a few games like Perfect Dark and Hybrid Heaven in much choppier frame rate hi-res, you can do MORE SHIT with the GameShark.

Any fan of the 64, pick you up one of these, take it from me. Your money will be worth it, your funs will be had.

I just found another 64 at the pawn shop today and they had one of these too so i grabbed it. Super stoked i never had one as a kid so im reliving my 90s gaming experience now! Lol mine doesn't seem to be working properly though when i boot the game after adding cheats it just goes to a black screen.
