Oregon once had a set of laws in place that legally prohibited African Americans from entering the state. Although these laws were not actively enforced, they were incredibly effective in preventing Black people from settling in Oregon.

More than 60 of Native Tribes in Oregon were terminated by the federal government in 1953. Termination meant revoking tribal sovereignty and government responsibilities to Native peoples, as well as claims to reservation land and unique identity.

I lived in Hood River, Oregon for a while and probably had one or two black families. Thanks for the series. Great show.

The U.S. has never wanted Black Americans or Native/Indigenous People to be around each other unless Natives owned Black slaves (Lookin' at you 5 Tribes, 1 of which I'm descended from) or Buffalo Soldiers were helping to clear the land of Native people for whyte people. when it's just us together comparing notes...danger Will Robinson!

The state constitutional language allowing slavery as punishment for a crime was only voted out last year, and sadly by a small majority

Thank you for this video. My family settled in Oregon in 1884 and I am looking further into these laws to understand what happened.

Never been to Oregon. But I lived in Seattle and I knew several people from Oregon and it was shocking to me how social inept they were in dealing with people who weren't wyte Americans. Now I know why that is.

You have missed a point. During WWII my family moved to work in the shipyards. My uncle Murray from Riley Station, Birmingham, Al.has live there since 1956. I went there in 1978 joining the Park Service as a ranger. I was at Mt.St.Helens.

Portland in the sixties demolished one of the only black neighbourhoods in the city to build the I-5, and only now are we seeing some justice, as the Albina Trust slowly regains the land with hopes of property restitution as well as the construction of community centres. It's not much but there is thankfully some hope that in the future work can truly be made towards Oregon redeeming itself of this heinous sin

Things don’t really occur by accident. Intentionality is ever present.

I think people prefer to believe differently. Helps them sleep at night.

It wasn't just in Oregon. Under the Headright System, Texas instituted FIRST CLASS HEADRIGHTS: Settlers who had arrived prior to the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, and had not yet received a land grant from Mexico were entitled to a First Class Headright. Heads of families were eligible for one league and one labor of land (4, 605.5 acres) and single men were eligible for 1/3 of a league (1, 476.1 acres)
These headrights and lands were specifically excluded under law to African and Native Americans.
2nd, 3rd, and 4th class headrights followed, most with NO REQUIREMENT to work the land to keep the land.
