Carry on camping, with three small estate cars. Which is the best out of the Peugeot 308 SW, Skoda Octavia Estate, and Volkswagen Golf Estate?

People might be all over SUVs right now, but there’s definitely still a place for the humble estate. Racing driver Vicki Butler-Henderson, Millennial motoring journo Rachael Hogg, and mum Erin Baker (REV!) are testing three of the UK's most popular, based on how people search for them at Auto Trader.

They're looking at how easily they can fit into your lifestyle, covering practicality, connectivity, and ride and handling.

The ladies also give camping a go, with rather mixed success.

Don't forget to click the notifications button so you'll be the first to see any new videos.

Auto Trader is the UK’s biggest, best and most trusted car buying website, and our YouTube channel will help make finding your next vehicle easier than ever.

Every week, we’ll present the latest new car reviews, covering everything from supercars to superminis. Our motoring experts write jargon-free verdicts, cover real-world practicality, recommended specifications and reveal the real cost of ownership.

We also ask some of Britain’s most passionate drivers to share their stories, along with news, advice, Best ofs, used car guides and motorcycle reviews.

I have owned 2 308 SW GT line's both top of the range with 2.0 turbo diesel, best cars ive ever owned, i highlt reccomend one, shame they have ditched that engine and now offwr a 1.5 in its place, and i got a lot of attention from people asking what it was etc even a ford dealership were all over it

I've got the Skoda Octavia estate SE L 2 l diesel with DSG. Fast, very comfortable and reasonably well built.
Compared with my previous Mondeo 2.0l disel Titanium X BE the Ford is leagues ahead with build quality and handling. To be honest though the Skoda DSG is gorgeous to drive with oodles of grunt and makes the Mondeo feel sluggish on acceleration and response.

Thank you for taking the time to put this medium sized estate comparison together. It certainly doesn't appeal to the widest of audience but it is one of the very few out there. It provides a really good mix of practical observations and things that could be deal breakers when shopping for such cars. Please keep these REV videos coming, they get better by the episode. I particular enjoy the jokes and growing chemistry between the presenters.

It's funny how tastes differ between countries. In continental Europe, most automotive magazines and websites praise the Peugeot for its solid dynamics and chassis, yet the only country saying it is uninspiring and too soft is Britain...

Skoda is not anymore a budget car, price looks good when it says from ..., but if you go for better engine and some spec it will climb up much more than other brands.. currently the Peugeot 308 SW 1.5 diesel 130hp with loads of specs is sold in Slovakia for about 18k€. The similar Skoda will not go under 20k.

Lovely to hear three women reviewing a car rather than the usual guff from men. Something distinctly different in their approach - I really enjoyed them.

If the Fabia estate is classed as a small estate, how can the Octavia be classed as the same ?

There is a good reason why not all cars have built in satnav. For my Skoda it was a €600 option & you are tied into that software. Plug in stand alone units start at €50 & you can take with you for other use. Also the smart phone link up always uses the latest software & is free. Finally, when I am on a new route I read road signs & consult a paper map if needed.

I think it's very silly to have an octavia and a golf as they are basically the same have an i30 or astra

The Peugeot has actually a very nice driving experience if you give it some time to get used to the small steering wheel. You are also supposed to watch over the steering wheel to see the instruments .

If I have to have a small estate, the Golf R Estate ticks all the boxes.
