I highly disagre. Treasure Planet and Kubo and the two strings didn't do well because they didn't have good enough marketing, plus they weren't as middle of the road as a movie like Zootopia. I can't tell you how many Disney Facebook posts I see that's flooded with people begging for another 2D movie. Hollywood just goes with 3D becuase it's the "safe" choise. Since Pixar had hit after hit, studios began to think it was because they used 3D technology, when it was really the fact that they wrote great stories and character building. I feel that they use 3D animation because a lot of people now associate it with Pixar, a studio that's made hit after hit. Nobody wants to try 2D again because the last movie that was made in that animation was 2011's Winnie the Pooh, a movie that didn't do well because it felt they weren't trying hard enough to make a good movie. Animation doesn't matter. It's about the story. Hollywood just needs to realize that.

I still believe 2d animation will continue onwards. In fact, I'm learning how to draw it.

I still want to see what Disney could do with 2d animation if they did it now just thinking about how far animation has come since princess and the frog.

You're right, 2D probably won't be found in hollywood, but there's a bunch of 2D movies. There is actually more 2D movies right now than there was a few decades ago, when it was just disney, japan animation and a few other releases, and it's much more diverse, both visually and narratively. Look at Breadwinner, Pisconautas, Loving Vincent, Long Way North, The upcoming "Klaus" from SPA studios, just to name a few. 2D is still there (especially in Europe and Japan, but not only), you just have to look a little bit more to find it.

Tell this to Japan. They still pump out beautifully animated 2D films and tv shows constantly. Personally, I think that’s why I’m a fan of anime, I like seeing hand drawn 2D cell animation flow on screen.

So basically all my suspicions of not aiming towards Hollywood and just aim towards improving myself. I can dig it.

It should be clear that 2D will be no more in movies(even ads) with huge budgets, but everything underneath that, owwww yes baby, 2D.

Anime remains 2D. And they are great. Kimi no nawa the recent 2D movie is a big hit in Asia.

Even though I'm a diehard Pixar fan, I still prefer 2D over 3D.

It'll probably make a comeback at some point.

It continues to piss me off that a film's success is heavily based off of box-office numbers. It's an outdated measuring system.

I can definitely agree with what is said in this video, but I do feel Like 2D Animation is in a way making a comeback in some feature film aspects, where with some CG animated films, they do give some a 2D Animation style movement to them which is at times very creative. But yeah again I agree with what’s mentioned in this video.

2D animation is almost becoming extinct in America because of computer animation and computer animation is dominating traditional animation in America traditional animation still alive on television and other countries still produce hand drawn animated films such as Europe and Japan and the UK.
