How To Read Music: Dotted Notes

Whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes are actually just the beginning when it comes to rhythm in music. There are more complex ways to write rhythm, and the first everybody should learn is the rhythmic dot. This is Part 6 of the How To Read Music series.
This dot goes to the right of the note, and it adds one half of the note's value on to itself, so a dotted quarter note would equal one quarter note plus one eighth note.
However, the duration that the rhythmic dot adds to a note is NOT the same for every note. For example, a dotted half note is equal to one half note plus one quarter note. So this means how long the rhythmic dot is will vary depending on what the note is. With the help of this dot, we can add more variation to our rhythms than just plain quarter and eighth notes.

It's so hard to read! First it was the pesky alphabets in my math and now math in my music.
