$299 Canon R5 & R6 Vlogging Lens?? | RF 16mm f/2.8 STM for Photo & Video

I'm not much of a vlogger, but I do like the idea of getting out more and doing videos on location, but the classic 16-35mm vlogging setups are just too bulky and expensive. So when Canon announced the RF 16mm f/2.8 STM, I immediately pre-ordered it as a $299 solution to my problems and I was haven't been disappointed yet.

When I shot APS-C, I loved the canon 10-18mm. It was one of my first lenses. Then I traded up for an RP and haven’t shot ultra-wide since. So I’m glad canon is making more low end lenses like this for hobby photographers.

This looks like a sweet little lens. The price and size make it pretty interesting for vlog and travel content. Might have to pick this little guy up!

Great post! Glad to see you posting more stuff. Excited for this lens especially because it’ll make my EOS R’s 4K with 1.7x crop finally usable!! 😂😂

Try using EF 15mm lens profile and setting distortion to 40 ish OR the RF 24-240 Profile with distortion at 130ish

This would be a fun RP combo for portability and somewhat discrete-ness. And stabilize in post I guess.

Nice review. Seems perfect for a walkabout vlog lens 👌

This will be a vlog lens for me, for sure. I have the EF 16-35 F4L but I rarely actually shoot wider than 24mm. My RF 24-105 F4L is my go-to for photography. I can see using the 16 for street photography since its small size makes the camera comparatively inconspicuous.

looks great on my 4k monitor can't wait to get my hands on my pre-ordered copy! For photos we're gonna need to correct in post but i'm cool with that for only $299

I just realised you sound a lot like Peter McKinnon. I was just listening and got confused for a second 😂

I don't like how Canon isn't weather sealing these cheaper lenses. Be nice to at least have a seal at the body to prevent dust on sensor. Probably adding this to my kit though.

You are the hero we all need Benj. supply chain issues mean I won’t get mine for a time.

Really appreciated the video - thank you! Curious if you know what the digital IS crops to - I'm planning on getting the R8 (which has no IBIS), so this lens plus that would necessitate either the use of a gimbal (which I'll grab eventually, but...) or the use of Digital IS in either of the "regular"/"enhanced", and I cannot (for the life of me) find any information on what that actually crops to, lol. The 24mm 1.8 has IS built in, plus a shallower DOF, but is almost 2x the price (and I may STILL need to turn on Digital IS), so just trying to find a middle ground :) Thanks again for the video - great stuff!

I am so excited for this lens. I live my 15-35 but it’s just so big and bulky!

Hi Benj, thanks for testing this lens. It looked great for video.

Just one question: do you have all the lens corrections turned on in the camera? The reason I ask this is because a Canon rep in Melbourne told me Canon bakes the lens corrections into the raw files (for "some lenses") because they know Lightroom doesn't have lens profiles! So if you have corrections turned on the corrections are meant to be baked in and the files should appear corrected when opened in any software. If you do have them turned on and you're not getting corrected raw files then I guess this lens is not included in the "some lenses" he referred to LOL.
