For Heart Gold and Soul Silver, if you hold it up against the light it should be see through. This applies to the Gen 5 games too since they all used IR.

Thanks for this. I just bought a bunch of DS games and all were sealed. I immediately noticed from one buyer the "sealed" games had poor print quality, so I'm putting in a claim with eBay on those. The others seem legit, to I opened one and went over it thoroughly and it has the rectangles on top. So I think I'm safe on these ones.

Jesus, I've never noticed that... Time to see all my DS Cartridges.

Thank you for the tip :D

That's some good info. I've never seen the tops of the carts compared like that. I would however, like to recommend that people never use one single method to prove any game is real. Using a single method like that can definitely prove fake, ex: completely smooth, must be a fake. But if counterfeiters start using those shapes in their carts, even if they're not perfect, that may be falsely identified as real.

Thank you! It’s 2021 and this is the first time I see this method of spotting fake cartridges

Another tip from one of the original game collecting channels where people learned a lot from over the years

This is a valuable bit of info especially considering just how prolific DS fakes are in circulation, the only methods i had upto now was checking the dot printed serial codes on the back of the carts and making sure it matched the game box/manual serial the other was booting the games up on a 3DS as nintendo's firmware usually exposes fake carts pretty well.

Whenever I get a fake game in a lot of game, I scratch repro into the back of the cases. That way if I sell it, no one can sell it as authentic.

Thank you so much! I bought a copy of Pokémon White off of Amazon for 65 bucks, and I was instantly on edge because I wasn't sure if I just made an awesome purchase or the biggest mistake ever xD I checked it against the lightning, checked for spelling mistakes, and finally... it has the indentations on the top. Seriously, you just saved my life xD

That’s a great tip dude… just compared my games and you’re absolutely right. I can’t believe out of all the videos I’ve watch nobody else mentions this.

Thank you so much! I grew up with DS games and unfortunately gave away my collection as a teenager. Trying to get back into them now but I was worried about purchasing games online… now I know to request a photo of the top! 🎉

I'm sharing this video with everyone who asks, "Is this legit?" Still so many people don't know this.

Thank you so much for this gem of advice! I just discovered after watching your video that my copy of Super Mario 64 DS is fake. Even the case and manual was a reproduction. 😩

Yep, I was sold a fake Super Princess Peach DS game off of eBay once and like you said, the top edge is smooth, while the DS games i own, that I know are real have those markings. A good tip to share!

I didn't pay attention. As a kid I used to notice that a lot but didn't realize why. Now I'm asking sellers on ebay for games that are pricey that I need for my collection if the cartridges are real then making sure I don't get ripped off

The really frustrating thing for me has definitely been that I'd ideally like to just buy a cart-only, as some of these Pokémon games go for super high prices and I just want to play them, but those seem to be super common reproduction carts so my two options seem to be coughing up like double the price or having a huge chance of getting a fake... so annoying!
