His initial (purple) containment spell (a prepared ritual) was overcome by Lirrak. In desperation, the second containment spell (golden) was being powered directly from his spirit and vitality. And the struggle of binding an elemental force took a lot out of him.

I understand his pain and he wants to get revenge for the death of his daughter but I feel bad for the dragon to because she and the other dragons represent the magical pillars of this world and without them the world will fall into chaos
