If you think about it, it makes a LOT more sense for the people to be wondering what the "toot toot" noises are, as opposed to roaring in the distance. They live in the mountains. They have bears, trolls, sabre cats... A roar isn't exactly new or mysterious. "Toot toot" would raise a lot more questions.

This scene just made the game substantially less frightening and more funny yet also made Thomas the Tank Engine less funny and more frightening....
