Bitwig Studio has unveiled its latest update, Bitwig Studio 5.1, at NAMM 2024. The update focuses on sound design tools and introduces 10 new characters to enhance users' creative processes. Fredrik introduced one of the key highlights: the modular sound design environment, Grid, which now includes three new character filters—Fizz, Rasp, and Ripple. These filters have undergone extensive development and offer a wide range of sonic possibilities. Additionally, Bitwig Studio 5.1 introduces the Byte oscillator, a digital dual oscillator with various sync and XFM options.

The update also includes six new wave shapers and two new audio effects devices: Filter Plus and Sweep. Filter Plus is a simplified version of Grid, providing easy access to filters and wave shapers in an audio effects environment. Sweep, on the other hand, offers more routing and modulation possibilities with its two filter slots and wave shaper. Bitwig Studio 5.1 also brings improvements to audio editing, such as audio quantizing, making it easier to align audio clips to the grid. GUI updates have been implemented, particularly in the mixer mode, allowing tracks to be displayed in a more customizable manner.

I really like the look of Bitwig. I wonder how close to Ableton it actually is. So much good Ableton how-to/tutorials content out there. Probably easier to just follow along than have to translate that to another daw but if it's close I would be tempted to make go Bitwig.

How about the developers focus their attention on the poorly implemented audio and midi editing side of this subpar DAW instead of constantly upgrading effects all the time? The number one thing that makes or breaks a DAW is the sequencer. This is not a serious competitor to Ableton, nor will it ever be.

These filters he demonstrated might be complex math, and the sounds were complex-sounding, but musical to my ears they were definitely NOT - his demo sounded like variations of scraping your fingernails on a chalkboard, lol. Sound like art is definitely in the mind of the beholder, and people have different tastes, but I can assure this buffoon that no hit musical recording is ever going to sound like that filter

If they were honest the answer would be: “Nothing new that deserve point update. Yet again we waste our time and subscribers money on unnecessary plugins instead of QOL improvements and bug fixes”.
