Re-watching the first few scenes I think it’s clear that Joe was trying to get Donna to take him back. He immediately compliments her, and he says that the girls talk about Ron all the time so it makes sense that he would get a sense of him well enough to know how to connect with him with woodworking and how he interacts with the girls. So he can talk him up to Donna. Because if you notice when Donna goes up to him and basically says they can give it another go, he doesn’t seem that’s surprised by he seems like he was anticipating it. He knows going to her begging for another chance will turn her off she has to come to him. It’s like April says she’s a cat. And aside for actually genuinely loving her, she’s probably the best sex ever had because he immediately was subtly asking when she can wear the “red thing.” He was ready. Donna is the baddest of the baddies and she knows it, he knows it we all know it.
