Project Heil Mary by Andy Weir is my favorite first contact as well as having the best bromance in scifi.

These top tens are so good I feel like I need to be taking notes. My TBR list is getting so big. Thanks for all the great videos Michael

I'm almost done with Schild's Ladder and was amused at your struggle to describe it without spoiling it. 😀 Good job! Fascinating story! My first Egan book, and as a physics geek, I really appreciate it.

I haven't read Mote for decades. i really want to revisit it now. I enjoyed your squirming trying not to reveal too much of the Egan plot. 😀
I really enjoyed Kindred, so Dawn sounds good.
A few to add to my list there, especially Lagoon. Great list and video Michael. 👍

Fantastic list Michael, thank you! Cheered out loud when Lagoon came up, then again when Dawn came up! Lagoon is one of my favourite books of all time - I was hooked by the audio-book sample, which is the passage from the point of view of the smartest bat in history... Laughed out loud at the conclusion of that scene! Love Nnede Okoriofor. And Dawn / Exogenesis (or is it Xenogenesis? Doubting myself) is one of my absolute favourite descriptions of aliens. Love their genetic perceptions, ideas of racial "purity" and evolving to survive - so so much to love in the whole series. Adore the Martian Chronicles too - I'm always citing the story of the abandoned smart house on Earth, making endless breakfasts for a family long-gone. Love love love Lem, though haven't read HMV yet, so thanks for the recommendation! I'm on book 3 of Rama right now - some of those descriptions in Rendezvous where the centrifugal gravity messes with the cosmonauts' sense of "up" and "in" are informing a piece of aerial dance I'm working on at the moment. The universe (aka the Science Fiction Alliance) keeps telling me I have to read Greg Egan, so I'd better get on with that... Keep it up, dude! Love it all!

Loved this - I need to look into Dragon's Egg and Blindsight. I am reading Rendezvous with Rama soon....great video mate.

Love this subgenre, thank you for these. And thank you for a nice long summary because it really helps to pare down what books will be the most enjoyed (my tbr is about a mile long. ) 👩🏻‍🚀

Love the way you describe each of these books!

Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past is a shocking take on first contact--worth a read, though it allows no hope for humanity.

Contact is one of the novels I enjoyed almost equally as a book or film Great selection.

Amazing list Michael.. Solaris hits so hard, especially If you've lost someone you loved... Lem nailed it on so many levels !

Does The Killing Star count as a first contact story?

In reference to Rendezvous with Rama (they do every thing in 3's), there is also another novel called Marrow about a 'ship' one astronomical unit long, there are some very big ideas in it as well

Great List! Have a few on my shelves that I need to get to (Solaris, Martian Chronicles, Lagoon). Intrigued by Blindsight.
Did like Rama (had a Clarke phase in my 20s), Dawn is very powerful, raw even, and I LOVE Contact too 😊

"Schild's Ladder" is the hardest SF I've ever read!

Yaaay, Солярис T-shirt! (Tarkovsky's movie, not the Lem's novel it was based on. Polish is written in a somewhat expanded Roman alphabet.) I want one!
