The Basics Of Creating Families In Revit

This is a video meant to give you the very beginning basics for creating parametric families in Revit. The video is recorded with Revit MEP but the concepts are exactly the same for Revit Architecture and Revit Structure. Future videos will follow and build on these concepts in an effort to demonstrate the advanced parametric concepts.

If you align your sketch lines to your reference lines you will find your families working more often when they get more complicated instead of the surface or edge of your extrusions. Some of us have strong opinions on how to build these families but there is multiple ways to make Revit do what we want. I really really appreciate that fact you push for consistency in what view you draw in.  Overall I look forward to seeing more videos

If you don't see the label option at the top when you click the dimension. Then right click the dimension, select label, then select add parameter in the drop down.

I agree with bubbusby. Why also wasn't it mentioned why equal dimensions were made to the center reference planes? The point of these video's is to explain the process and why. Anyone can do step by step. Explain why.

I have a question and maybe you could answer it, once you create a label for a family and you misspell the label or say you have extra label from a design change or started the family from a template that already had extra labels that you don't want to show, can you get rid of these extra labels and how? I am working on a Revit architecture 2013 student version.

so when I go to add a dimension, it will allow me to do so and I tried following your steps, but when I went to go add my second dimension on the horizontal plane it will not let me select the dimension key.. Is there a reason why?

I am building a housing estate, so I have a lot of repetition of the same house. Is it possible to build a house as a family and then insert it throughout the object? If it is how do I do it? Thanks
