Martha and the Vandellas have a lot of great, great songs. "Dancing In The Street", "Heatwave", "Jimmy MacK"...on and on.

Of the Motown girl groups, Martha and the Vandellas hit the hardest. They rocked.

Martha worked as Berry Gordy's secretary at Hitsville in Detroit. She filled in as a backup singer for Marvin Gaye when a singer didn't show up, and she got a session after Mary Wells didn't show for a lead vocal.
Three more Martha And The Vandellas songs: "Heat Wave" "Dancin' In The Street" "Jimmy Mack."
After Gordy bugged out of Detroit, Martha tried to make it on another label. She never matched her Motown success. She was, though, a Detroit City Councilwoman for several years.

One of the incredible bass lines from the indelibly great Motown bass player James Jamerson.

Martha and the Vandellas are underrated. Their songs were some of the best of Motown. Dancing in the Street, Jimmy Mack, Heatwave, definitely this one.

As a Detroit guy, it’s hurts my heart that you’ve never heard Martha and the Vandellas before. Please take a weekend and dive into Motown and the Detroit sound from the 50s, 60s and early 70s.

This song was used prominently in the movie The Warriors, and it was co-opted for the movie John Wick for a similar scene.

Remember, Motown acts don't play the instruments. It's always the in-house backing band The Funk Brothers, and I think that this is one of the best compositions they ever wrote. I think it's one of the best drum intros of all time, too. The person killing it on the tambourine is Jack Ashford, who is now the only surviving member of The Funk Brothers.

This is their GREATEST song! Another great example from the iconic Motown sound.

Fun production fact: At Motown, when it came time to press the master acetate of the record the musicians would stand next to the machine that was literally cutting the acetate and add handclaps, tambourines, other percussion instruments and even vocals as the needle was imprinting the sound from the tape. Those sounds would end up on the "top" of the mix, which is why Motown records have that punch.

My favorite by them is Heat Wave. They are one of great Motown girl groups!
