My home island of Newfoundland has a distinct dialect. It has thousands of words no longer used in English in other countries. The principal occupation of the original settlers was fishing. A hangashore refers to a man who would find an excuse not to go fishing. The word has since morphed into a pejorative towards someone lazy.

Interesting as always. My grandparents would say “ice cabinet” as well: isskab in Danish and is=ice, slab=cabinet. We also use the word svamp for mushrooms. Mushrooms and sponges are the same word in Danish too: svampe😂🎉❤
