I took my daughter to the top of the cathedral years ago and they then started ringing the bells 🔔 for the hour and you could feel the entire building swaying from side to side and it was pretty scary to experience it due to how high up it is and also the fact I had my daughter with me (who was just laughing at me freaking out lol 😂) there’s so much history behind Durham that even the locals aren’t aware of!! It’s worth taking a tour with a historical guide to see the more unusual side of the city’s history and see what buildings still survive to this day. The hermits house on the riverside at old Elvet is a great story along with some of the tales about the hauntings which if you’re into that stuff is fascinating 🤨
This is great content but really only a tiny snippet of what is over 1000 years of history. Pleased you enjoyed it though and hope you get a chance to visit again and maybe learn more about what is really the not so well known historical side of this great historical place 👍👌💯

Durham has more than the cathedral and castle. A riverside walk encircles the pedestrianised centre, connecting Elvet and Framwellgate bridges; delightfully tranquil. The market place is attractive, the covered market interesting and the Market Tavern a place for traditional pub meals. Other pubs to seek out are the Dun Cow and the Victoria, but there are plenty of others. Central Library and Gala theatre at Claypath are modern buildings, just off the Market Place, from which three interesting narrow roads exit. There is, of course, more to be found if you look . . .

Free access to the cathedral - no tickets required. The view from a train entering Durham station from the south is a 'world heritage view' - don't miss it.

Durham is my city. The centre has so much to offer - hope you also got to see the wonderful Old Durham Gardens and Crook Hall and Gardens (National Trust property). Love the Botanic gardens too and we have the best woods too for Bluebells as well as Low Burnhall Woods which has fantastic sculptures including the most famous - the large "wickerman".

Your map has Durham placed roughly where York is.

This is awesome! There's so much history (and movie set history!). Loved the video style, btw.

We used the park and ride from Sniperly...only £2.40 for all day, machine easy to use or pay driver, who are helpful and friendly and it's not far so you can easily do some shopping in the morning, pop back to your car, then return to enjoy rest of the city, we walked but you can get a bus up to the cathedral ..
