Last story: If he proposed to me after not taking my side, I'd tell him "No." to his face. "Your mother is a horrible person to me. I want a mother-in-law - not a monster-in-law. You chose your mother over me. We're done."

If your future or current spouse will NOT support you and square away their family, then you hand over the ring pr break off the relationship. A spineless spouse is worthless and a red flag. You deserve a decent life. Run from a spineless SO.

No mother-in-law should ever take precedence over the wife. Ever. OP might have to walk away... and let her hubby decide whether he is worthy of her love. Once a mama's boy... always a mama's boy... UNLESS the man steps up to put his mother to one side, and his wife AT his side.

I will never get allowing the in-laws to abuse them with "dear hubby" being okay with it too. He is enabling the abuse to continue with his approval. Inviting just their son to dinner is a controlling action to emotionally abuse her. Isolation is very important. If the hubby won't speak up, get rid of him.

OP needs to record MIL at all times then confront Huppy with an ultimatum of fix it or get out.

I just don't understand how these women and men let their mill's and moms walk all over them..get some balls..let them know from the jump that you're not taking any crap from them

The wife in the first story missed a perfect chance to get a good dig at the POS MIL. At the funeral, when the MIL said her son hadn't changed, just had cut his hair and gotten fat, his wife should have said, it's true, he has gained weight since he's not eating at home anymore. Now that I'm cooking for him, he's getting tasty and well made food that he enjoys eating!

These people do these things knowing that the OPs 1- will not cause a scene and 2- are non-confrontational in the extreme. If these OPs would actually cause a scene and stand up IMMEDIATELY, the problem would be solved. If the spouse didn't immediately back the OP, walk.

I mean if your mother in law signs the wedding certificate that's her approval of the marriage. I would hold that over her head.

If my in-laws had of ever not invited me, my husband would not have gone. But then, my in-laws aren't that rude either.

Stand up for yourselves ladies! And if your boyfriends or husbands are not standing up for you get rid of them! Life is entirely too short to spend time with people you do not like, whether or not they are family. My mother in law was actually the best until my husband died then it was my fault he died because I didn’t do enough for him. She is out of my life and I’m better for it.

I think a good response to the MIL that regularly makes things up is to start loudly talking to others in earshot of her about how it is so sad to see her aging and memory starting to go - that she misremembers and makes things up, then if she comes over to argue say (in a very calming soothing tone) “oh yes, of course you remember things. It’s going to be alright. Why don’t you sit down and I’ll get you a nice blanket and tea?”

My MIL was nosy and a pervert. She would stare at me and make comments about me nursing. Well lots of stories about her but when my husband (now exhusband) cought her picking her nose and wiping it on the chair and asking how big my husbands wahoo is she was no longer allowed in our home and around our kids.

Any time I hear a Reddit story, I feel grateful that my life is so uneventful and so blissfully boring.

Years ago, my (50F) husband (49M) asked me if I'd mind if we moved into the house next to his parents.

I laughed and said, "Why would that bothler me? I'm not going to be the one that they're pestering for trivial crap every day."

So, we moved into the house next to his parents, . as I predicted, the calls from them starter came out in every day. Gee..i

I'm having a harder time feeling sorry for these OPs with their spineless husbands and psycho in laws. All they do is whine. Get your own spine and walk away from all of them.
