Celtic Thunder - 'George'

Celtic Thunder fans, “Thunderheads” as they are affectionately known, took great joy in watching George perform his signature solos within each of the Celtic Thunder shows. This DVD, which is a tribute to George’s life and love of performance, highlights those moments that his fans loved so much. From proudly singing his lead line in the Scottish anthem “Caledonia” to his poignant performance of “The Old Man” and “My Boy”, George’s performances oozed charisma, always meeting the mark and connecting with his audience. His song choices throughout all of the Celtic Thunder shows follow a common theme. They are a reflection of a man’s passage through life, covering the most important themes that we associate with our journey through adulthood; Love and commitment “Life With You” and “The Voyage”; Career “Working Man” and “Yesterday’s Men”; Loss of a parent “The Old Man”; Relationship with one’s children “My Boy” and “Cat’s In The Cradle”; Aging “Gold and Silver Days” and “Life In The Old Dog Yet” and patriotism in “Skye Boat Song” and “Caledonia”.

We wrap up our tribute DVD to George back in Dublin at The Helix with Mythology and we meet Colm who had recently joined Celtic Thunder. We see a very happy and relaxed George singing "The Grand Affaire" and "Scarlet Ribbon" and there’s no doubt who the big smile and the wink is for, sorry if you thought it was for you, his biggest fans Carolyn and Sarah were in their usual seats in the front row. We could not leave the next song out, "Life Without You" it’s a big number sung so passionately by the Big Man. The DVD finishes with "Unseen Footage" which was edited from the footage that our very own Angie has filmed while on tour with the guys. In all the DVD features 23 tracks that highlight just what a special part of Celtic Thunder that George was. It has been difficult to put the DVD, CD and Photo Book together, so many memories flooding in, but we are really happy with the end result and know that George would have approved.

I am saddened by the passing of such a great talent. I am equally saddened by the fact that I never got to see him perform in person and now I won't get that chance. I am thankful for the music and videos that share his talents and I plan to take advantage of all of them. George, you are missed.

George was an inspiration, his voice, his ability to connect to the audience, to bridge the voices of the others, to warm the heart or bring it to tears. He was a remarkable talent, and a remarkable man. A rare treat to get to see in life. He will be missed.

I wonder when I will be able to hear him sing without feeling this sense of loss. I didn't know the man personally, but I feel he was still a friend.
